Description from the seller

The Bible, or the entire Holy Scripture of the Old and New Testament — according to the German translation by Dr. Martin Luther
Convolute of 3 historical Luther Bibles, 19th century

Three significant editions of the Luther Bible from the 19th century, each issued by different Bible Societies:

1. Hamburg, printed by Johann Bernhard Appel, 1818 — on the occasion of the Hamburg-Altona Bible Society (founded 1814), distributed through the booksellers Perthes and Besser. Rare early edition, about 208 years old.
20x11.5 cm. 1079 + 308 pp., dark full leather binding. Faded gold tooling. Slightly loosened binding. Red wax seals on the front and back boards.

2. Halle, Canstein Bible Institute, 1837 — Third edition of the Petitschrift, 210th edition, with the library stamp “Zu Danzig” (provenance Danzig). The Canstein Bible Institute (founded 1710) is regarded as the oldest Bible society in the world. About 189 years old.
19.5x12 cm. 1079 + 308 pp. Worn full leather binding. Slightly loosened binding. Inside somewhat browned/spotted. Handwritten note in ink by an old hand on the front flyleaf.

3. Bremen, Depot of the American Bible Society, Stereotype edition (late 19th century) — with 5 colored geographical maps. Technically and content-wise particularly interesting.
22.5x14 cm, 916 + 311 pp. Beautiful gilt edges. Front hinge in the lower part broken.

All three volumes in full leather bindings. Show age-appropriate signs of use. An appealing lot for collectors of historical Bible editions, church-history enthusiasts, and lovers of Protestant book printing in the 19th century.
