Taki 183, whose real name is Demetrius, is an American street artist, born in Greece.
He is one of the pioneers of New York tagging.
His tag "Taki" is an abbreviation of Demetraki, an alternate name for Demetrius. The number 183 comes from his address on 183rd Street, in the New York neighborhood of Washington Heights. The legend says he was a young courier in New York at the beginnings of hip-hop. He was writing his nickname all over the streets of New York that he frequented daily in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Spotted by a journalist from the New York Times, Taki made his entry into the edition of July 21, 1971 of the newspaper, through an article whose title has remained in everyone's memory: “TAKI 183 Spawns Pen Pals.”1
After abandoning graffiti for many years, the official Taki 183 site was launched in 2009.
Taki counted among the artists represented at the Graffiti Museum of L'Aérosol in Paris from 2017 to 2018 for the Maquis-art Hall of Fame exhibition organized by maquis-art, and at the exhibition "Conquête urbaine" at the Museum of Fine Arts of Calais in 2019.
He has recently exhibited in the US with the legend Blek le Rat as well as the Expo beyond the streets currently in Paris
