MÉRÉ Chevalier de [Antoine Gombaud], Works. Amsterdam, Pierre Mortier, 1692. 2 volumes in 1 volume. octavo. [5] ff. including frontispiece, 285 pp., [12] including front., 383 pp., [1]. Half glazed Havana calf with corners (s. Ve Niedrée, between 1854 and 1860). Spine with 5 raised bands ornamented grotesquely, author and title labels in green morocco, gilded edges, bookmark. In fairly good condition, slight wear to the joints and corners.

First collective edition of the works of Chevalier de Méré, archetype of the gentleman, salon philosopher favoring the art of discussion; Méré presents a body of small philosophical treatises as well as a substantial correspondence.

Contains, for Vol. I: Discours de l'Esprit à Madame de ***, Discours de la Conversation, Discours des Agrémens, De la Justesse à Madame L. M, Les Conversations du Chevalier de Méré & du Maréchal de Clerambaud; for Vol. II: Lettres.
