5. The sea and the waters of the mainland. First division. The Sea.
6. Second division. The waters of the mainland.
Water in relation to nourishment.
7. Water as habitat of animals and plants.
8. Water as a means of transport and as aid for the arts and crafts.
9. What water is to the poet and to the painter.

"The seven plates and the other illustrations are more to elucidate the text,
than that they would serve merely as ornaments; I nevertheless trust that they
will not bring the book into disrepute. And so may my work go forth, and find a friendly
judgment."
