Description from the seller
Atala by Chateaubriand.
Illustrated by Gustave Doré with 30 full-page plates and 12 other illustrations at the beginning or end of the foreword, epilogue and chapters.
Carlo Aliprandi Editore - Milan.
Period edition (undated, but late 1800s) of "Atala", the famous literary masterpiece of the Viscount François-René de Chateaubriand, a milestone of French romanticism. The volume is distinguished by the monumental iconographic apparatus signed by the legendary illustrator Gustave Doré, whose 30 spectacular full-page engravings, plus others smaller, heighten the drama and exotic allure of the American forest and the tragic love story told.
Pages: XI + 144
Dimensions: about 33 x 24.5 cm.
Cover: half-leather with marbled boards.
Conditions: the major defects are the binding partly open from page VI to XI and from the epilogue to the end, page XI reduced due to trimming at the margins, a substantial loss on page 17 due to burning (with part of the text missing, see photo), page 129 of the epilogue reduced due to trimming at the margins. Other defects: stains and foxing more or less extensive, some creases and small tears. But the plates, the absolutely most important part of the work, are all present and in good condition, intact, almost all very clean (stains and smudges, when present, are concentrated mainly at the margins). The cover shows various signs of wear and chipping, particularly on the spine and corners.
