Description from the seller

Rare Antique Timekeeping Lamp (Oil Clock) in Pewter and Glass – 19th Century

Fascinating and rare oil timekeeping lamp (historically also known as an oil clock), an unusual antique item of great historical-scientific interest. Before the widespread diffusion of mechanical table clocks, these lamps were used mainly at night: the level of oil dropping into the glass ampoule, moving down along a graduated scale, allowed measuring the passage of hours in total silence.

The piece features a solid and slender structure entirely made of pewter, equipped with an elegant scroll-shaped side handle and a wide circular drip-proof base. At the top rises the vertical transparent glass reservoir, originally intended to hold the fuel.

A truly distinctive collectible piece, ideal for decorating a Wunderkammer (curiosity cabinet) or as an exclusive furnishing element.

Dimensions
Height: 38.5 cm
Base diameter: 14 cm

Conditions
The item is generally in good condition for its age. It shows a very small dent on the base and one on the spout, minimal signs of time that attest to its authenticity and original use. The glass reservoir is intact and perfect.
