Description from the seller
Noëlle Catherine Lucile Fournier-Verneuil (1821–1896), better known after her marriage as Lucile Doux, was a French painter born in Paris on July 27, 1821. She was the daughter of Vincent Fournier-Verneuil, a notary and writer, and grew up in a cultured environment connected to the arts.
In 1842, she married Jean Doux, a railway company director, while continuing to pursue her artistic career. She studied under several artists, including CHARLES CHAPLIN, and regularly exhibited her work at the Paris Salons during the 1850s and 1870s. Several of her religious paintings received recognition, including a depiction of Saint Peter commissioned for a church in Courbevoie.
One of her best-known works is La Charité (Charity, 1854), a painting presented by Napoleon III to a parish in Corsica.
She died in Louveciennes on August 14, 1896, and was buried in Paris. Today, she is remembered as a representative of 19th-century French painting and as one of the women artists who established a professional career at a time when female painters were still relatively uncommon.
