A traditional Javanese Sirih set, brass, in very nice condition. Complete with 5 pots and the Pinang scissors. Three of the five pots are still filled, among others with the lime, the bowl is nicely open-worked.

The chewing of betel, also called sirih chewing, was and is widespread throughout Indonesia and is a narcotic (drugs as we would now say) that has to be prepared in a complicated way before use. Therefore you find so many pots on a complete sirih set. (if done correctly 5 pieces) One for the betel leaves, one for the lime (often still in), one for the betel nut, etc. The use of sirih was a frequent occurrence that had a central place in social life.
