Handcrafted walking cane in dark mahogany wood with silver inlays and a hooked handle, circa 1910–1940, made in France, length 85.5 cm.
Description from the seller
Walking cane of fine artisanal craftsmanship with a hook grip. This form offers a very comfortable and ergonomic hold and allows the cane to be easily hung on the arm when not in use. The shaft is made of dark/stained black mahogany, characterized by a fine grain and a smooth, satin finish. The contrasting decorations are done in silvered (supervised by a goldsmith), applied flush with the surface of the wood. In the center, two small oak leaves are clearly inlaid in the finest detail, complete with veins. Oak has historically been a symbol of strength, resilience, wisdom, and longevity. Next to the leaves there is an asymmetrical geometric shape that recalls a stylized arrowhead, a fin, or a heraldic silhouette. The decorated section is bounded by metal lines that form a pointed motif (a “V”) and a light geometric interlacing, which serves to elegantly frame the entire composition. Between the dark handle and the light shaft is a brass collar.
At the lower end a black rubber nub (or rubber rim) with a flared, bell-shaped form is applied.
This element is essential for canes intended for daily use or hiking: it provides non-slip grip on smooth surfaces (such as floors or asphalt) and cushions the impact on the ground, protecting the underlying wood from chipping or wear. Era: Early Twentieth Century (circa 1910 - 1940) of French origin. Size: 85.5 cm.
