Description from the seller
Inner Abyss
Artist: Federico Alibrio
Material: Cold-burnished terracotta
The Silent Song of the Depths
"Inner Abyss" is a sculptural work by Federico Alibrio that captures the majestic, ancestral essence of the whale, transforming it into a symbol of introspection and inner journey. As the title suggests, the creature does not simply swim in a physical ocean, but moves fluidly through the abyss of the soul. The cetacean's body is modeled with extraordinary plastic sinuosity, whose curvilinear flow imparts a suspended dynamism: an eternal movement that seems to defy the intrinsic static nature of matter.
Material and Visual Elements
The Ancestral Grooves: The whale's belly is carved with deep vertical striations, typical of mysticetes. These incisions, vibrant and asymmetrical, recall the texture of stone worn by time and water, as if they were the marks and wrinkles of accumulated experiences in the depths.
The Cold Patina: The chromatic choice centers on a palette of magnetic blues, cerulean tones, and silver hues that evoke the play of filtered light typical of shadowy ocean zones. The chiaroscuro contrasts emphasize the sculptural relief and give the terracotta a quasi-metallic or fossil-like appearance, as if the creature emerged from a mythical past.
The Tail and Fins: The powerful caudal fin shows jagged edges that speak of a lived, wild and untamed nature that resists opposing currents. The pectoral fins, extended in space, feature small dark nodules and organic irregularities that enrich the texture, making the surface tactile and alive.
The Mark of the Master
The work reveals its artisanal and poetic authenticity in the most intimate details: on the sculpture’s flank is imprinted the artist’s monogram, a geometric seal that merges with the whale’s skin. Turning the piece over, the terracotta reveals its hollow nature and original color, a warm, primordial earth on which the hand-engraved signature "F. Alibrio" stands out.
This stark contrast between the cold, oceanic, armored exterior and the warm, fragile, earthy interior perfectly embodies human dualism: the surface with which we face the external world and the pulsating, intimate, protected nucleus of our self.
"Inner Abyss" is not only a representation of a giant of the sea, but a visual amulet dedicated to those who do not fear exploring their own personal depths, a silent guardian of the secrets housed in the inner deep sea.
The work was created by shaping refractory clay and then firing it, which makes the piece unique and original. The whale is depicted as swimming and designed to be wall-hung, though it can also be placed on a surface.
The piece will be shipped with careful packaging and an accompanying certificate of authenticity.
The Italian artist Federico Alibrio, born in 1995, is always seeking inspiration through new experiences.
Graduated in Sculpture in 2021 from the Academy of Fine Arts of Catania, he works in sculpture and painting. He has participated in and continues to participate in high-profile cultural exhibitions and symposiums, showing commitment and seriousness in tackling sculptural practice.
Reality itself is the greatest source of inspiration. His passions are: wild animals (sensitive to endangered species) and trees. His goal is to showcase the beauty of nature.
