The XI Winter Olympic Games were held in the city of Sapporo, which received this right in 1966, winning over the Canadian Banff, the Finnish Lahti and the American Salt Lake City. These were the first Winter Olympic Games outside Western Europe and the United States, and the fourth Games outside these regions. Wikipedia
