Ultima Cena, a Baroque oil on canvas from Peru dating to the late 17th century (c. 1690), attributed to the Cusco School, with a 31 x 42 cm format and unsigned signature, featuring gold leaf details and a recent restoration.
Description from the seller
Important Last Supper Painting – Cusco School (Peru), Late 17th Century (c. 1690) – Details in 24-Karat Gold Leaf, Restored
DESCRIPTION OF THE WORK
In auction, a fascinating and rare oil on canvas depicting the Last Supper, a masterpiece attributed to the famous Cusco School (Peru) and datable to the end of the 17th century (circa 1690).
The work is a perfect example of the cultural and religious syncretism that characterized the Viceroyalty of Peru. Native artists, under the influence of European masters sent from Spain, developed a unique language: intense faces, rich drapery, theatrical drapery in the background, and, above all, the meticulous application of 24-karat gold leaf (brocateado technique) to illuminate sacred details, such as Christ's halo and the weave of the fabrics.
The recent restoration has brought back to light the extraordinary vivacity of the original color palette, enhancing contrasts and the precious gilded details that had been obscured for centuries by dust and oxidized patinas.
PROVENANCE: purchased by my family in the 1980s and kept in a seriously damaged state all these years. now restored and returned to its former splendor
CONDITION & RESTORATION
Support: Excellent current condition. The painting has undergone a complete and professional retensioning restoration. The period canvas, severely damaged, was stabilized on a new support and mounted on a modern frame to ensure its future structural integrity. unfortunately the frame was too damaged see last photos in the listing as it was originally.
Painted surface: Excellent conservative cleaning. The original colors have returned vivid and bright. The small losses of time have been integrated professionally at the painting level without altering the original hand. The gold leaf gilding is in an exceptionally bright state.
