Description from the seller
Erwin Blumenfeld was one of the most influential photographers of the 20th century. An experimentalist and innovator, he produced an extensive body of work that includes drawings, collages, portraits and nudes, celebrity portraits, advertising campaigns, and his renowned fashion photography in both black and white and color.
Not by chance is Erwin Blumenfeld considered one of the pioneers of fashion photography, alongside George Hoyningen-Heule, Cecil Beaton, and Horst P. Horst. Not only his use of experimental techniques in the darkroom, the Dadaist and Surrealist influences, and his innovative street work, but also Blumenfeld's singular and masterful blend of elegance and eroticism transformed fashion into high culture and paved the way for Richard Avedon, Irving Penn, Herb Ritts, and other photographers who achieved great renown and recognition in the history of art.
In addition to holding the record for the most Vogue covers, Blumenfeld’s works were reproduced profusely on the pages of Cosmopolitan, Harper's Bazaar, Life, and Vogue during the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s. Many of the images from these photo sessions have become icons in the history of fashion photography.
