Description from the seller
Portuguese Solid Silver Tray – Rococo Revival – Javali II Hallmark (833‰ Silver) – 1887–1937 – Dated 1940
Impressive Portuguese solid silver tray, richly decorated in Rococo Revival style, bearing the Portuguese “Javali II” hallmark, used between 1887 and 1937, guaranteeing a silver fineness of 833‰.
The tray is executed in high-relief repoussé and chased work, displaying elaborate scrolling acanthus leaves, floral garlands, shell motifs, and finely sculpted mascarons arranged in a harmonious and symmetrical composition. The deeply modelled border enhances its sculptural presence and decorative impact.
At the center, a smooth cartouche is engraved with the date 8-9-1940, suggesting it was likely commissioned as a commemorative or presentation piece.
The design reflects the strong influence of 18th-century Rococo aesthetics, characteristic of fine Portuguese silver from the late 19th to early 20th century.
