Lost-wax bronze casting Pair of Centaurs, Chiron and Nessus

The centaur belongs to that group of mythological Roman figures that survive intact even in the medieval bestiary. Half man and half horse, they were archery champions and wine lovers (they are often associated with the figure of Dionysus, god of wine). Our pair of sculptures is rendered with meticulous attention to detail and represents an important group of sculptures with great charm.

Il centauro appartiene a quel gruppo di figure mitologiche romane che attraversano indenni anche il bestiario medievale. Metà uomini e metà cavallo erano campioni di tiro con l’arco e amanti del vino (sono spesso associati alla figura di Dionisio, dio del vino). La nostra coppia di sculture è rappresentata con minuzia di particolari e rappresenta un importante gruppo di sculture dal grande fascino.
