The Illustrated Bible by Edy Legrand Extraordinary Bibliophilic Edition in 4 Volumes in full leather — Marseille Book Club 1950
Magnificent and imposing prestige edition of The Illustrated Bible by Edy Legrand, published in 1950 for the prestigious Marseille Book Club, complete in 4 large volumes bound in full leather with decorative tooling.
This remarkable post-war bibliophilic achievement is one of the finest illustrated French editions of the Bible in the 20th century, bringing together the Old and New Testaments in a typographic presentation of great elegance, enhanced by the visionary and powerfully expressionist compositions of painter and illustrator Edy Legrand.
The set is distinguished by its numerous full-page and text-free illustrations, executed in a dramatic and mystical style immediately recognizable: scenes of the Exodus, apocalyptic visions, monumental sacred figures, biblical landscapes bathed in chiaroscuro, and compositions of exceptional graphic intensity.
The volumes feature superb full-leather tawny bindings richly stamped in gold tooling, with decorative motifs and gold titles on the spines, offering a particularly decorative ensemble for a library. The interior layout, printed in black and red on fine paper, reflects the great care given to this luxury edition.
