CONTEXT AND SIGNIFICANCE
The so-called "military revolution" of the 16th century radically transformed how cities were built and defended. The increasing effectiveness of artillery forced the abandonment of medieval walls in favor of angular bastions, ramparts, and complex geometric systems capable of dispersing the impact of projectiles. Italy was the main workshop of this transformation and developed the bastioned fortification model that would later be adopted throughout Europe.

Cataneo’s treatise constitutes one of the first mature syntheses of this new discipline. The author addresses not only the construction of fortresses but also the arrangement of encampments, organization of defenses, the geometry of military works, and techniques of assault and counter-siege. The numerous plates allow readers to follow step by step the design of the defensive works, making the work a true operational manual as well as a theoretical text.

For clarity of exposition and completeness of illustration, the volume represents one of the most important testimonies to the diffusion of the fortification “to modern” that would come to dominate European military architecture until the 18th century.

BIOGRAPHY OF THE AUTHOR
Girolamo Cataneo, active in the second half of the 16th century, was a mathematician, military engineer, and theorist of fortified architecture. He worked during one of the most innovative periods of European military technology, when mathematical knowledge progressively applied to the design of defensive works. His treatises gained wide editorial success and were reprinted several times, becoming reference tools for military engineers and commanders. His work contributed significantly to the diffusion of Italian technical-military culture across the European continent.

PRINTING HISTORY AND CIRCULATION
The Brescia edition of 1564 marks the first printing of the work. Printed by Giovanni Battista Bozola, it achieved immediate editorial success due to its practical character and high quality of the illustrations. Numerous reprints and expanded versions followed, reinforcing the authority of the treatise among specialists in military engineering.

Copies of the first edition are today decidedly less common than later reprints and are particularly sought after when they preserve the richly illustrated apparatus in its entirety, including the double-page plates, the folded plates, and the large final colored plate, elements often subject to loss or damage.
