Dial and Hands
The dial presents a striking, character-rich aesthetic, having aged from its original lighter tone to a warm eggshell hue, now covered in a prominent and even stardust spotting across the entire surface. This pervasive patina gives the watch a unique, organic texture highly sought after by collectors of vintage timepieces, free from isolated moisture stains or surface damage. It features applied faceted steel baton indices with black inserts, complemented by an applied Omega logo at twelve o'clock. The crisp black printing of the sans-serif OMEGA AUTOMATIC and script Seamaster remains fully intact and legible, with SWISS MADE flanking the six o'clock marker. The original dauphine hands show age-consistent oxidation and darkening, particularly near the center pinion, aligning perfectly with the dial's vintage character.
Case and Crystal
The 34mm stainless steel case remains in highly attractive condition, retaining thick lugs with well-defined lines and sharp factory chamfers. The transition between the polished bezel and the lug profiles is distinct, framing the dial beautifully. The signed scalloped Omega crown operates smoothly and sits flush against the case flank. The caseback is a particular highlight, featuring a deeply preserved, crisp Seamaster hippocampus medallion that shows minimal softening from wear. The inside of the caseback is properly stamped with the reference 165.009. The watch is fitted with a domed crystal that provides excellent clarity to view the dial, displaying only light surface wear consistent with careful use.
Movement
Inside beats the beautifully copper-finished Omega Caliber 552 automatic movement, featuring 24 jewels. The movement presents exceptionally clean, with crisp engravings displaying the caliber number and the serial number 21229587, perfectly matching the production era of the case. Exhibiting remarkable accuracy and consistency, performing brilliantly for a vintage timepiece. The timegrapher results indicate a superb +5 to +6 seconds per day with strong amplitude. Movement has been recently serviced and adjusted, and performs strongly.
Strap
The watch is fitted with an original, period-correct stainless steel expanding flat-link bracelet. The bracelet features spring-loaded links for exceptional comfort and flexibility, secured by a fold-over clasp adorned with a prominent, raised Omega logo. The bracelet accommodates a wrist size of up to 18cm.
Condition
Good vintage condition. The case remains robust with sharp lines, crisp chamfers, and light handling marks. History
Introduced in 1948 to celebrate Omega's 100th anniversary, the Seamaster was initially modeled after the waterproof wristwatches made for the British military during World War II. It quickly became renowned for its rugged reliability and elegant styling. By the 1960s, the Seamaster line had expanded to include refined, understated dress watches that retained their robust, water-resistant heritage. References like the 165.009 represent the golden era of Omega's mid-century design, making them enduring favorites among vintage enthusiasts today.
