- Catechism, That is: Instruction in true Christian religion — Together with the portions of each answer and testimonies of the Holy Scriptures: Divided into 48 Sundays throughout the year. For the youth of the city and country of Zurich. Zurich, printed in Burgliche Printing, 1764.
These two volumes concern a classic Reformed house book of the Zurich church from the 18th century — a collection of the most important texts for private and liturgical use by believing Reformed Christians. The core of both volumes is identical: the New Testament in the traditional Zurich translation from Greek, the Psalter of David (referred to as the Little Bible) in the German prose translation by Rudolf Walther, and the Zurich Catechism, which divides faith instruction over 48 Sundays of the liturgical year and targets the youth of the city and surrounding Zurich. The older volume (1763–1765) additionally contains Lobwasser’s psalms — the rhymed, four-part verse psalm setting that found broad use as a hymnbook in German-speaking Protestantism.
Both volumes were printed in Zurich: the older in the municipal Burgliche Printing House, the newer by the publisher David Geßner. The work reflects Zurich’s Reformed piety tradition from Zwingli to the late 18th century.
Decorative full-leather bindings on wooden boards. Joints broken. Spine of Volume 1 broken in the middle. Beautiful, punched metal clasp (most likely silver?). Clasp with the front cover of Volume 2 missing. 16.5x9.5 cm. 351 + 88 + 240 + 40 + 403 pp.; 367 + 88 + 448 + 222 pp. Interior lightly browned. Handwritten notes on the two flyleaves in ink by an old hand. Ornate gilt edges.
