Description from the seller
CH Beltman (1850-1938)
The Dutch painter C.H. Beltman (1850–1938) was known for his atmospheric nature scenes in which light, color, and stillness come together. He primarily worked in oil and focused on rural scenes with forests, avenues, and farms. His work shows a remarkable sensitivity to light and color nuance. He managed to subtly render the seasonal changes in the landscape. Beltman’s paintings were not only sold in the Netherlands but also internationally—among others in Canada—highlighting his enduring appeal.
The painting “Beech Avenue in Autumn Colors” is a beautiful example of his approach. An avenue of tall beech trees leads the eye deep into the landscape, while at the side a pond softly reflects the warm autumn light. The colors—from copper brown and golden yellow to deep green—create a harmonious, almost melancholic atmosphere that is characteristic of his work. The way Beltman depicts the reflections in the water and the light mist among the trees testifies to a strong sense of atmosphere.
The painting is executed in oil on canvas, mounted in its original period frame, which enhances the work's classical appearance. This combination of warm autumn hues, refined brushwork, and natural depth makes the painting a rare and collectible piece within the Dutch landscape tradition.
