Lydia Thomas (born 1987), Beichte (Beichtstuhl), a contemporary bronze sculpture patinated and partly in oil, edition 3 of 6 (2015), 36 × 52 × 25.5 cm, 10 kg, signed at the base Lydia Thomas 3/6, Germany, in excellent condition.
Description from the seller
An original sculpture by Lydia Thomas in bronze. The gallery price is €6,900.
The German painter is known for her figurative painting, which, through brushwork, color, and fragmentariness, is loaded with ambiguity and an aura.
“What interests me is abstract realism, the work at the boundary between the real and the abstract.” Lydia Thomas, 2025
Some of these figures and objects with special presence are brought from the canvas into the plastic as well: mainly as bronzes, whose almost alchemical process fascinates the artist, with small editions or unique pieces produced.
Confessional Secret
The confessional booth, which stands symbolically for the sacrament of confession in the Catholic Church, is such a special object. The artist, who grew up in Catholic Bavaria, must know the mysterious pull exerted by the furniture, cut off from the rest of the church space by walls and a curtain. What is discussed in close proximity between the clergyman and the believer remains a mystery to the outside world.
The dark patinated form of the baroque-decorated confessional is further significantly enhanced by painterly means. Thomas repaints the curtain with a blue that directs and intensifies the longing for the secret.
According to the appraisal by the presenting gallery Weise, Chemnitz, dated 18 February 2025, five of the six-piece limited edition have so far been produced by the Ihle art foundry in Dresden.
A painting titled "Beichtstuhl" is published in the catalog of the Doberauer class "Dioskuren".
