Description from the seller
IT EXISTS ONLY ONE IN THE WORLD - EDITION 1/1
With this square-format work, Medsan pays vibrant homage to the Japanese pictorial tradition by merging ink painting (sumi-e) with the precious sheen of gold leaf. A geisha holding an opened fan is captured in a posture of great nobility, directly inheriting from bijin-ga — the art of “beautiful women” portraits magnified in the Edo period by master printmakers like Kitagawa Utamaro. This unique giclée conveys dialogue between the sobriety of black and the sumptuousness of gold, in the spirit of Rinpa school gilded screens.
The visual power of the composition lies in its gesture: the subject, outlined with a sure, nervy line, emerges from a tumult of washes, splashes, and black ink splatters. This almost calligraphic energy, inherited from brush handling in the suiboku-ga tradition, pits portrait mastery against the spontaneity of matter. The touches of gold — the adornments (kanzashi) pinned in the hair and the radiating fan — punctuate the grayscale palette with bright, refined accents.
The impact of the work rests on this tension between the raw and the precious: the controlled violence of the drips highlights the face's immutable grace, while gold transforms the figure into a true icon. The geisha is no longer merely a subject but the embodiment of an elegance that resists the chaos surrounding her.
A graphic, expressive, and contemplative piece, at once rooted in classical Japan and resolutely contemporary. Ideal for adding a precious, elegant, and theatrical touch to a design-forward, collector’s interior.

About the Atelier:
Atelier Joconde is a workshop of artists brought together around a living and plural contemporary creation. Established as a true site of artistic production, the studio operates both in collaborative creation and in individual approaches, depending on projects and works. Atelier Joconde is also a family venture. Le Yack, a contemporary figurative painter, develops a narrative and introspective body of work with cinematic and realistic influences. Next to him, Medsan, oriented toward pop art painting, explores color, modern iconography, and visual culture. Finally, Neo Pablo engages in a more instinctive search, blending abstract art, outsider art, and figurative abstraction. Each work is conceived, created, and followed within the studio, with a common artistic standard and a unique identity for each artist.
