ABOUT THE ARTIST

Andreu Alfaro (1929–2012) was a Spanish sculptor and one of the leading figures of modern abstract sculpture in Spain. Born in Valencia, he was largely self-taught and began his artistic career in the late 1950s, drawing inspiration from Constructivism, geometry, and industrial materials. His sculptures are characterized by elegant linear structures, rhythmic repetition, and a masterful exploration of light, movement, and space.

Alfaro gained international recognition through numerous exhibitions and three participations in the Venice Biennale (1966, 1976, and 1995). He created nearly one hundred monumental public sculptures installed in Spain, Germany, and the United States, becoming a key figure in public art. His major achievements include the Spanish National Prize for Plastic Arts (1981), the Premi d’Honor Jaume I, and the Creu de Sant Jordi. Today, he is regarded as one of the most influential sculptors in contemporary Spanish art.
