Description from the seller
Stunning first deluxe bound edition, published by George Allen and Unwin in 1977. This is the edition printed by William Clowes and without a price on the jacket, rarer than the Billings edition.
The Silmarillion is a collected edition of J.R.R. Tolkien's works, edited and published posthumously by his son Christopher, with the help of fantasy writer Guy Gavriel Kay.
It is the main source for the ancient history of Middle-earth and the First Age, and for the downfall of the Kingdom of Númenor. “The Silmarillion” is also a general term for the entire body of these narratives, in all their stages of development and modification by Tolkien from the 1910s up to his death, from which the content of the Silmarillion was drawn -
The work opens with Ainulindalë, the myth of the creation of the world where the supreme god Eru Ilúvatar brews the Ainur, spiritual powers who partake in a vast cosmic music from which the universe is born -
Among them stands out Melkor, the most powerful of the Ainur, whose pride and thirst for domination introduce discord into the original harmony. Next comes the Valaquenta, which presents the Valar and the Maiar, divine spirits tasked with governing the newly created world -
The central part of the work, the Quenta Silmarillion, tells the history of the Elves from their awakening to the great wars of the First Age. At the heart of the tale lie the Silmarils, three incomparable gems fashioned by Fëanor, the greatest of the Noldor artisans, in which the holy light of the Two Trees of Valinor is preserved -
