Jules Verne, Around the World in Eighty Days, illustrated edition (1874) published by James R. Osgood and Company, hardcover, 320 pages, in English.
Description from the seller
Superb second edition of the definitive illustrated edition published by Osgood -
Fascinating illustrated edition with a frontispiece and 54 engravings of this work that features one of its most famous heroes, Phileas Fogg, a London gentleman of extraordinary punctuality and rigor whose existence is entirely governed by habit and precision -
When, during a discussion at the Reform Club, he claims that it is now possible to travel around the world in eighty days thanks to the recent advances in railways and steam navigation, he accepts a considerable wager that obliges him to prove the truth of his assertion -
Without delay, he leaves London accompanied by his new French valet, Passepartout, a lively, imaginative, and deeply humane character, whose temperament sharply contrasts with that of his master -
At each stage, Verne meticulously describes the means of modern transport, the landscapes, the peoples, the customs and the great infrastructures that symbolize the rise of globalization in the 19th century. However, the journey is far from being merely a technical demonstration -

Good condition of the binding, the work in its original full blue cloth cover illustrated, surface stains on the cloth and signs of use (the covers are tilted due to previous storage), binding slightly loosened but intact, moderate wear to the ends with slight coloration and surface soiling on the edges, corners chipped down to the cardboard with fraying at the ends and hinges, spine worn and slightly crushed at the ends, chipping with losses at the bottom, gilding rubbed with slight discoloration of the spine, smooth decorated back, titling, author’s name and gilded ornaments, wonderful black engraving on the front cover -
Good interior condition, slight browning throughout the text with a few rare signs of foxing and age spots, the frontispiece flyleaf is intact, though slightly torn, front gatherings fragile, endpapers free of inscriptions but badly creased in the upper right corner of the back cover, pages 285-291 creased at the bottom right, book enriched with a frontispiece with 54 engraved illustrations, page 8 bears a blue star mark at the top left, modern endpapers in good condition, a pleasant copy -
