Val Saint-Lambert, Belgium, is a rare moulded and satin glass lion-head candlestick from the late 19th century, height 24.5 cm, catalogued in 1879 and noted for its bold lion heads and floral neo-classical decoration.
Description from the seller
Val Saint-Lambert (Belgium) – Rare molded and satin crystal candlestick with lion heads – model listed in the 1879 catalog
Elegant and rare molded crystal candlestick produced by the prestigious Val Saint-Lambert Glassworks, Belgium, and positively identified thanks to its presence in the 1879 catalog.
This remarkable piece perfectly illustrates the decorative richness of Belgian glass production at the end of the 19th century. The shaft is adorned with four powerful satinized lion heads in relief, symbols of nobility and strength, while the base features an elaborately worked décor of floral and architectural motifs inspired by Neo-Classical design.
The contrast between the glossy and satin surfaces admirably highlights the quality of the casting as well as the technical mastery of the Val Saint-Lambert workshops at that period. Under the light, the crystal reveals depth and a particularly seductive fineness of detail.
The figurative models documented from this era are today much rarer than the Art Deco productions of the 20th century and are generating growing interest among collectors of Belgian crystal and enthusiasts of 19th-century decorative arts.
