Pliny. Natural History by C. Plinius Secundus. Venice, by Alessandro Brucioli e fratelli, 1548. First very rare edition curated and translated into the vernacular by the Florentine humanist Antonio Brucioli of Pliny’s masterwork. The work constitutes a monumental encyclopedic treatise spanning astronomy, geography, zoology, botany, and medicine. The volume is extremely hard to obtain, since Brucioli himself was arrested and condemned by the Venetian Inquisition to be banished from the city and to have the works he curated and printed put on the Index. Half-leather binding. Printer’s device on the title page. The title page and one page reprinted. Dimensions 20 x 15 cm, 40 pages (?) – 1068 (in Roman numerals). Excellent condition.
