Encyclopédie Méthodique. Histoire., two volumes edited by Panckoucke with Gabriel-Henri Gaillard as main author, in original French, half-leather binding, 1523 pages, 26 by 20 cm.
Description from the seller
Encyclopédie Méthodique. History. Volumes one and two (2 volumes).
Gabriel-Henri Gaillard (chief author), with contributions from Claude-Louis-Michel de Sacy and others. Paris, published by Panckoucke, 1786.
Offered are the first two volumes of the History portion of the monumental Encyclopédie Méthodique, the grand successor to the Diderot–d’Alembert Encyclopédie. The publisher Charles-Joseph Panckoucke conceived the whole work from 1782 as a thematically organized, considerably expanded new edition of the famous Enlightenment encyclopedia – instead of an alphabetical arrangement, each branch of knowledge formed its own dictionary in itself. The History section originally comprised five volumes, published between 1784 and 1791, plus a supplementary volume in 1804. The chief author was Gabriel-Henri Gaillard (1726–1806), a member of the Academy and a proven historian. The present two volumes come from the publication year 1786 and mark the opening of the History portion. They appeared in the large quarto format (in-4°) with Panckoucke’s characteristic high-quality book-arts aesthetic.
26x20 cm. 792 + 731 pp. Worn quarter-leather binding of the period with pink boards. Interior very well preserved. Splendid watermark.
