Artwork description:

With “Nude with Umbrella,” Peter Robert Keil combines the classical tradition of the nude with the spontaneous energy of Neo-Expressionism. The work radiates joie de vivre, humor, and color intensity, and is among the particularly decorative figurative works from his early 1980s period.

At the center is a female figure with a stylized body and pronounced, expressive facial features. Above her floats a colorful umbrella, whose bright stripes in yellow, green, red, and pink resemble a crown or a stage prop. This creates a nearly festive, carnival-like atmosphere.

The strong black contours structure the composition and give it the immediate energy that makes Keil’s work worldwide unmistakable. The combination of deep blue in the background, bright pink, white, and yellow creates an extraordinary depth from a distance and makes the painting a focal point even in large rooms.

Despite the humorous exaggeration, the figure possesses dignity and presence. Keil does not transform the classical nude into a realistic depiction, but into a symbol of vitality, freedom, and artistic spontaneity.

The composition exudes liveliness, directness, and artistic immediacy—a homage to color itself and an optimistic statement for any collection.

His artistically talented mother fought her way with her son to West Berlin in the final phase of the war, where the two settled after the war. There Keil grew up in the working-class district of Berlin-Wedding and soon discovered his interest in painting—especially in expressionist artists and the works of Pablo Picasso. The painter Otto Nagel, who came from East Berlin, became his mentor from around 1954 and taught him his first technical skills and painting techniques.
