Artwork description:

With “Spanish Bullfighter,” Peter Robert Keil takes up one of the most traditional motifs of Iberian culture and translates it into his unmistakable neo-expressionist pictorial language. The work combines dynamism, drama, and strong emotional presence into a composition of extraordinary expressiveness.

The figure does not appear as a realistic portrait, but as a powerful symbol. The monumental shoulders, stylized stance, and distinctive facial features convey confidence, tension, and concentration – qualities associated with the mythologized figure of the Torero.

Rich pink, black, white, and blue tones create a strong contrast. The dominant black lines structure the painting and give it a raw, immediate energy. The widely opened eyes form the psychological focal point of the composition and draw the viewer directly into the action.

The silvery-gray background reinforces the presence of the figure and recalls the dramatic atmosphere of an arena just before the decisive moment. Despite the strong simplification, the emotional impact remains extraordinarily intense.

The work unites folklore, symbolism, and modern painting into an impressive example of Keil’s early creative phase.

The composition radiates joie de vivre, directness, and artistic immediacy – a he r homage to color itself and an optimistic statement for any collection.

His artistically gifted mother struggled with her son toward West Berlin during the final phase of the war, where the two settled after the war. There Keil grew up in the working-class district of Berlin-Wedding and soon discovered his interest in painting – particularly in expressionist artists and the works of Pablo Picasso. The painter Otto Nagel, from East Berlin, became his mentor from around 1954 and taught him first craft skills and painting techniques.
