Description from the seller
Giuseppe Martinelli – "Port Scene in the Gulf of Naples" – Oil on Canvas with Period Frame
I present at auction a painting of great charm and quality, an oil on canvas bearing the painter Giuseppe Martinelli’s autograph signature in the lower right. To unequivocally and definitively confirm the work’s authorship there is also an important contemporary description affixed to the back of the canvas, authenticating the hand. Martinelli stands out in the panorama of Italian painting in the 20th century for his extraordinary ability to reinterpret the great tradition of marine painters with a modern, vibrant sensibility and a clearly post-impressionist matrix.
The painting depicts a evocative view of a port located in the province of Naples. The composition is orchestrated with great mastery and dynamism: on the right side of the scene stands a large sailing ship moored near the wharf, flanked by a steam vessel recognizable by its smoking smokestack. On the left side and along the horizon line loom other smaller sailing boats, which add depth and breath to the whole marine landscape. an artwork with the Atmosphere, the sea and the Light of the South
The painting technique is rich, textural, and characterized by quick, visible, vigorous brushstrokes. Martinelli focuses on the rendering of light and the tremulous, hesitant reflections of the foreground water. The atmosphere of the sky, veiled and laden with brackish humidity, evokes the great school of European marine painters, translating it into the warm light of the Gulf of Naples.
The painting is enhanced by a magnificent period presentation. It is set in an elegant frame with a green velvet mat, itself enclosed by a rich gilded and decorated frame. The structure is perfectly congruent and contemporary to the period of the work (the 1960s/1970s); the choice of velvet and gilding enhances the canvas’s chromatic tones, making the painting a ready-to-hang object of great visual impact.
