AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Rare and highly expressive Norwegian studio ceramic vase, dated 1959, with a sculptural brutalist form and a powerful textured surface.

The vase has a low, wide, architectural silhouette, with an irregular oval mouth and a strongly tactile body. The surface is heavily textured, almost geological, with dark earthy tones, metallic golden-bronze effects and areas of light blue glaze on the lower body. The contrast between the rough, volcanic upper surface and the blue-black lower glaze gives the piece a very distinctive Nordic mid-century character.

On the base there is an old paper label reading: "Kunstnerforbundet Oslo Kjeld Stubs gate 3".

The base also bears an incised monogram/signature and the date 1959. The signature is clearly present but has not been identified, therefore the piece is offered as by an unknown Norwegian ceramic artist.

Kunstnerforbundet in Oslo was, and remains, an important Norwegian artists’ association and exhibition venue, which makes the label especially interesting as historical provenance.

A very decorative and collectible example of Scandinavian mid-century brutalist ceramic design.

Height: 16 cm
Maximum width: 21 cm

Very good vintage condition.

The vase has an intentionally rough, irregular and heavily textured surface, typical of this type of brutalist studio ceramic. There are firing irregularities, small glaze losses, rough edges and minor surface marks consistent with age, technique and handling. The rim is irregular by design and should be carefully assessed from the photos.
Please look carefully at the photographs, as they are an integral part of the description.
