Description from the seller
An extraordinary, museum-quality antique "Sun" Gong (Bossed Gong) from the high regions of Nepal. This is a genuine 19th-century ritual instrument, estimated to be at least 200 years old. With a massive weight of 26.4kg and a diameter of 77cm (Circumference: 2.5 meters), this piece is exceptionally rare due to its extreme thickness and metal density.
Craftsmanship & Material:
Masterfully hand-hammered by ancient artisans using the sacred 7-metal alloy (Gold, Silver, Mercury, Copper, Iron, Tin, Lead). The immense weight relative to its size (77cm) indicates a very thick casting, typical of the highest quality temple instruments. The surface features authentic, deep hammer marks and a rich, century-old natural patina.
Sound & Healing Properties:
As a "Sun" Gong, it produces incredibly powerful, low-frequency vibrations with an almost endless sustain. It is specifically designed for deep sound therapy and vibrational healing, capable of resonating through large spaces and affecting the nervous system with its grounding energy.
Condition:
Superior antique condition. The natural oxidation and signs of age are clear indicators of its 200-year history. No structural cracks or issues.
Specifications:
• Origin: Nepal
• Age: 200+ years (19th Century)
• Weight: 26.4 kg (Exceedingly Dense/Thick)
• Diameter: 77 cm
• Circumference: 250 cm
• Material: Traditional 7-metal bronze alloy
Condition: Superior antique condition with an authentic age-related patina. Notably, there is a professional, historical repair (welding/brazing) visible on one side of the rim. This restoration was likely performed decades ago using traditional methods to stabilize a minor hairline crack, common in heavy instruments of this age. The repair is robust, does not show signs of degradation, and crucially, does not negatively impact the gong's powerful sound or vibration sustain."
