One of the finest French Vergil editions from the era of the Revolution – with the Latin original text and an elegant French translation directly opposite, magnificently illustrated and in decorative bindings of the 19th century.
Publisher: Paris, de l’Imprimerie de P. Plassan, An IVe (1796). Nouvelle édition. Vollständig in 4 Bänden, illustrated with 18 Kupfertafeln. Contemporary marbled calfskin bindings with rich back, board and inner edge gilding, marbled paper endpapers, gilt along the edges, 24 x 15 cm.
------------------------------------------------
This impressive complete edition of Virgil’s works belongs to the sought-after French luxury editions of the late 18th century. Particularly appealing is the typographically elegant layout with the Latin original text directly opposite the French translation by Abbé Desfontaines – a format that made the work attractive for scholars as well as bibliophile lovers of classical literature.
The edition appeared in the years immediately after the French Revolution and combines the spirit of French classicism with the fine book art of the transitional period to the Empire. Noteworthy is the high-quality illustration with a total of 18 copper engravings, including a finely engraved portrait of Virgil by Dupréel as well as 17 expressive plates after Moreau and Giuseppe Zocchi. The scenes for the Aeneid impress with their dramatic staging and elegant line work, giving the work an exceptionally representative character. Additionally, the copy was enriched with a loosely inserted graphic.
The provenance also underscores the collecting prestige of this set: with an armorial ex-libris “EMSG” as well as the gold-embossed leather ex-libris of the distinguished French bibliophile Henri Beraldi.
A bibliophilic Virgil edition of great elegance – classical world literature in a presentation that exemplarily embodies the spirit of French collecting culture of the 18th and 19th centuries.

Bindings lightly rubbed, joints brittle, otherwise very clean copies
