"Le Manège #1" stages an encounter between two shirtless male figures and a large antique rocking horse inside a Victorian gymnasium. One figure sits mounted on the horse, gripping the central pole, upright and commanding, gaze lifted forward with calm authority. The other leans back against the body of the horse, head tilted back, eyes closed, expression of quiet surrender — his bare torso exposed and his weight given entirely to the figure and object behind him.
The rocking horse — a carved and painted artefact of childhood — becomes something else entirely in the hands of two grown men. What was once innocent movement transforms into a private ritual of balance and control. The gymnasium setting reinforces this tension: a space designed for discipline and physical instruction now hosts a scene that obeys its own rules.
The polished wooden floor captures warm reflections beneath the horse, while tall arched windows fill the hall with pale grey daylight. The climbing frames and equipment visible in the background serve as silent witnesses to a game played without an audience.
The artwork explores themes such as control, surrender, the tension between innocence and experience, and the transformation of familiar objects through the weight of human presence, rendered through a contemporary figurative visual language with cinematic natural light and classical compositional structure.
