Description from the seller
Important and scenographic collection consisting of 10 different series of traditional wooden Russian Matryoshka dolls, handcrafted between the 1950s and the 1980s circa, originating from the former Soviet Union.
The lot includes models very different from one another in style, size, decorative technique and number of inner dolls. There are sets of 7 elements, 5 elements, and 3 elements, with different interpretations of traditional Russian folklore.
All Matryoshkas are hand-painted one by one. The faces, floral decorations and ornamental details show slight manual differences that attest to the original artisanal production.
The collection includes:
traditional Russian floral models
multicolored lacquered decorations
Matryoshkas with natural wood finish
a series with gold leaf and metallic blue details
subjects featuring Orthodox architecture and churches
different shapes and proportions typical of vintage Soviet-era production
Some sets retain signatures, inscriptions or handwritten notes on the bottom, partly in Cyrillic characters, in addition to stamps reading “Made in USSR,” elements that reinforce authenticity and collectible interest of the lot.
Dimensions:
Largest Matryoshka: about 20 cm
Smallest Matryoshka: about 1.5 cm
Conditions: General condition good to very good considering age, use and the artisanal nature of the objects. Possible small signs of time, slight wear or imperfections consistent with vintage hand-painted artifacts.
For descriptive accuracy, note that one Matryoshka belonging to a 3-element series has a thin crack visible on the back/bottom of the body, as shown in photographs. Aesthetic defect that does not compromise the stability or decorative value of the lot.
A highly decorative collection rich in personality, ideal for collectors of Russian folk art, vintage Soviet objects enthusiasts, or for striking interior decor.
I am always seeking objects with a story to tell and that can still convey emotions to those who observe and preserve them over time.
