Description of the work
Here is a powerful abstract composition by Jordi Samsó, a Catalan artist known for his highly expressive approach to figurative abstraction.
The work opposes two large vertical forms in a tense and dynamic dialogue. On the left, a clear, more open and atmospheric form, almost ethereal. On the right, a dense and energetic mass, worked with great fervor: nervy lines, hatching, overlays and broad strokes of black that create a rich and vibrant texture. A broad, assertive black curve at the bottom of the composition links the two masses, giving the whole a sense of strength and an unstable balance.
The drawing, rendered in black and white, reveals the vitality of Samsó’s gesture. One senses both the influence of engraving (his favored domain) and his pictorial freedom. The work oscillates between pure abstraction and architectural or organic suggestion, typical of his mature style.
A strong, graphic and moving piece that immediately captures the eye with its contrast and energy.
Biography
Jordi Samsó Bastardas (1929-2008) is a Catalan painter and engraver born in the Gràcia district of Barcelona. He studied at the Escola d’Arts i Oficis de La Llotja and at the Baixas Academy. Considered one of the best burin engravers of his generation, he exhibited as early as 1951 and actively participated in the Spanish art scene.
A founding member of the avant-garde group 6+1, he developed over the decades a personal style of highly expressive figurative abstraction. His work is characterized by a lively, gestural, vital line, where abstraction often meets symbolic, ironic or erotic elements. He has produced more than fifty solo exhibitions, mainly in Barcelona, and his works are in many private and public collections.
