Two earthenware vases from Japan with a decorative metal basketweave overlay, estimated to date from 1980–1990.

Antique Japanese Awaji vases with metal basket weave (Meiji period, approx. 1900/1920
)Description: A beautiful and rare pair of antique Japanese ceramic vases from the renowned Awaji workshops (Awaji Yaki). These export vases date from the late Meiji to early Shōwa period (approx. 1900–1930) and are true showpieces for lovers of Asian art and antiques.The vases are decorated with a colorful, hand-painted floral motif and finished with a glossy, glassy glaze. What makes these pieces unique is the extremely fine and decorative metal basket weave overlay ('basketweave wire wrap') that is tightly woven around the ceramic. This protected the vases during transport to the West and gives them their characteristic antique appearance.
Origin: Japan (Awaji Island)
Period: Meiji / Early Shōwa (approx. 1900/1920)
Material: Ceramic / Earthenware and finely woven metal wire.
Condition: In very beautiful antique condition. The glaze is clear and the delicate metalwork has been exceptionally well preserved (see photos). A beautiful, decorative pair.
