Henry Markó (Florence, 1855 – Lavagna, 1921) was a refined Italian painter of Austro-Hungarian origins, renowned for his sensitivity and skill in landscape and marine paintings.
Growing up within a renowned dynasty of artists, he was the nephew of Károly Markó the Elder and worked in the family’s famous landscape school in Florence before the rise of the Macchiaioli.
He worked closely with Andrea Markó and Carlo Markó the Younger within the school founded by his grandfather. This academy fused traditional academic discipline with the influence of the Barbizon School.
His paintings are distinguished by deep atmospheric sensitivity, subdued lyricism, and the use of extremely subtle tonal shifts to capture natural light.
The first part of his career was spent in Tuscany, and he later moved to Liguria, in Lavagna, where he devoted himself to painting seascapes and coastal villages. His works are regularly traded at the leading Italian and European auction houses.
Recurring subjects include country views, densely detailed forests, and evocative coastal panoramas.
