“The Papaveri Rossi series by Mario Giacomelli is a stunning collection of color works and abstract landscapes created in the 1960s and 1970s on the Colfiorito plateau and Castelluccio di Norcia. These works are renowned for several features:
- The color choice; Giacomelli is universally known for his unmistakable stark black and white. The series stands out for a delicate, constructive use of color, with a nearly painterly approach.
- The subjects: The focus is on flowering fields of poppies, immersed in the nature and landscape of Umbria.
- Abstraction and the connection with Burri: Aerial and close-up shots transform the fields into true abstract canvases. This strand highlights Giacomelli’s strong human and artistic bond with the great informal master Alberto Burri.
The series was rediscovered and brought to a wide audience through a solo show hosted by the National Gallery of Umbria (curated by Alessandro Sarteanesi), which drew enthusiasts’ attention to these rare unpublished shots.
