Description from the seller
Eugène Marcel Mougin (1895-1981)
Architectural nook with tower and houses
Work signed by Eugène Marcel Mougin (1895-1981), representing an architectural nook of rural character, with a tower or stone construction as the main element of the composition. The scene shows a set of traditional buildings, vegetation and a narrow passage between houses, resolved with a very thickly applied and expressive brushstroke.
The work is part of French architectural landscape painting of the 20th century, with a clear post-Impressionist sensibility. Mougin builds the scene through a dense, loose and tactile brushwork, in which light and texture take on great prominence. The architecture is not treated in a strictly descriptive way, but interpreted pictorially through color planes, light contrasts and a pronounced vibrancy of matter.
Stylistically, the painting shows influences of French post-Impressionism, especially in the expressive use of color, the simplification of forms, and the importance given to the brushstroke. The artist works with luminous whites, ochres, greens, earth tones, and pale blues, generating a scene of great visual vitality. The orange-tiled roofs and the light-colored stone of the tower contrast with the shaded areas and with the vegetation, adding depth and chromatic balance.
The composition stands out for its dynamism. On the left, the wooden structures and architectural elements in shadow create a dark counterpoint against the illuminated tower on the right. The central path guides the gaze to the background, while the vegetation and the rooftops articulate the scene with a very attractive visual rhythm. The work conveys a sense of spontaneity and freshness, typical of a painting executed with great technical ease.
It is particularly interesting the treatment of the pictorial surface, with visible impasto and broad brushstrokes that reinforce the modern character of the work. The material becomes an essential element of the composition, providing relief, movement and a very pictorial reading of the architectural landscape.
The work appears signed in the lower right corner. The condition can be assessed in the photographs, which are part of the description. It is advised to carefully review the images to evaluate the general state of the work and the frame.
Presented framed with a golden and green frame of classic-decorative style, in keeping with the artwork’s aesthetics. The frame is sent as a gift along with the work.
A piece with strong decorative presence and collecting interest, especially appealing to lovers of 20th-century French landscape painting, rural architectural vistas, and post-Impressionist brushwork with impasto.
