Large Moroccan Taous porcelain serving dish, 40 cm in diameter and 4.8 cm high, made of hard-paste porcelain from Fez/Meknès, Morocco, in a Moroccan-Islamic Imari style, in very good vintage condition with no cracks or chips.
Description from the seller
Large Moroccan Taous porcelain serving dish in good condition.
Diameter: 40 cm
Height: 5.4 cm
Moroccan-Islamic Imari style
No cracks, hairlines, craquelure, or chips.
Although the factory stamp on the back literally contains the text "CHINA", this object was purely made for and used within Moroccan culture. This unique phenomenon sits in history like this: The Moroccan tradition: the so-called Taous (peacock) dinnerware is an absolute cultural icon in Morocco. From the 19th and 20th centuries, wealthy Moroccan families and merchants had this specific luxury dinnerware commissioned and produced abroad (first in Japan, later mainly in China) because they at that time did not have the ovens and technology for this type of heavy, finely glazed porcelain.
The collectible object: Precisely this historical combination – an authentically Moroccan design and tradition, but manufactured in China with a gold stamp – makes the dish a sought-after collectible.
Carefully packed and shipped promptly.
