Description from the seller
DEVAL Pierre (1897 - 1993)
"Fillette au ruban rouge"
Pastel
Signed bottom left
Beautiful work finely executed in pastel by the artist Pierre Deval which depicts a young girl with a red ribbon. The colors are vibrant, the technique mastered.
Born in Lyon into a family of silk workers, cousin and godson of Claude Farrère, he showed early aptitude for painting and drawing. In 1921, he took classes at the Grande Chaumière, in Paris. With his friends: René Clair, Eluard, Breton, Aragon … he participated in Dada manifestations and hosted the first exhibition of Max Ernst.
Later, in Algiers, he met Albert Marquet. In his wake, upon his return to France, he frequented notably Manguin, Camoin, Jean Puy, Friez and Matisse.
It was in 1925 that the artist settled in Orvès, in the Toulon suburbs. The Orvès estate, of which he was the owner, would provide him with a great source of inspiration. This artist of many talents expresses himself in all genres and in all techniques. He will paint the portraits of many Var locals in pastel. It is through his talent as a pastellist that he excels in his art and manages to render the beauty of the female nude bodies in the light of the Côte d’Azur.
He regularly exhibits in galleries and at autumn salons.
Dimensions: 45.5 x 32 cm by sight and 70 x 56 cm with its frame
