SUPPARO Ange Jacques (1870-1948)
" Mas en Provence "
Oil on canvas,
Signed bottom right,
Beautiful work by the Marseille painter Ange Supparo depicting a farmstead under the sun on a summer day, in the surroundings of Marseille or Porquerolles where the artist liked to paint. The artist plays with light and contrasts.
A student at the École des beaux-arts de Marseille, Ange Supparo attended various salons: those of French artists and the Société nationale des beaux-arts de la mer.
He participates in exhibitions in Marseille by presenting landscapes and seascapes.
In 1900, the Vignon gallery organized an exhibition of his works in Paris.
He becomes official painter to the Ministry of the Colonies, settles in Madagascar where in 1913 he founded the École des beaux-arts de Tananarive. Among his pupils were Antoine Ratrena (1881-1955), Gaston Rakotovao (1891-1941) and Henri Ratovo (1881-1929).
Nb: An old small restoration, with no impact, is visible on the back of the canvas.
Dimensions: 38 x 61 cm without frame and 47 x 69.5 cm with the original carved and re-gilded wooden frame.
