Description from the seller
M. de Pradt. The Congress of Vienna.
Complete in two volumes bound into one volume.
Paris, Deterville / Delaunay booksellers. 1815. 8vo. XXIX + 274; 267 pages. Havana brown morocco binding with a smooth spine, richly ornamented and with a red morocco title piece. Marbled edges. Gilded filet on the spines.
Second edition, but the year of the original.
Work in generally good condition, upper cap partially missing, epidermures and various wear, a few small wormholes, a tiny tear at the lower cap, corners rubbed (see photos). Interior in good condition apart from a few halo marks along the upper edge of some pages (see photos).
Dominique Dufour de Pradt (1757-1839), former Archbishop of Mechelen, was a diplomat and Napoléon’s chaplain; he became France’s ambassador to Warsaw.
The Congress of Vienna was a conference of diplomatic representatives of the great European powers held in Vienna from 18 September 1814 to 9 June 1815. The victorious countries of Napoleon I, as well as the other European states, gathered to draft and sign the terms of peace, thereby determining borders and attempting to establish a new peaceful order. The Congress of Vienna also allowed discussion on free navigation, the abolition of the slave trade (though not slavery, which persisted), and the promotion of Swiss neutrality and the neutrality of Savoy.
A very interesting work in period binding on the Congress of Vienna after Napoleon’s fall, by one of his former diplomats.
