Description from the seller
Solid wood sculpture, hand-carved, representing a female figure in long robes with hands folded in prayer (iconography akin to Our Lady/Madonna), in a popular carving style characterized by elongated lines, incised linear decoration (star and wave motifs) and geometric simplification of facial features.
Large-scale piece (approx. 53 cm tall), resting on an oval base.
On the base there is an old paper seal indicating cultural export authorization, with partially legible text referring to "Cultural Heritage" and "Authorized Export" (“Património Cultural” and “Exportação Autorizada”), in addition to a handwritten label with the initials "TR". This type of seal was applied to handicraft and folk-art pieces for customs control, in the context of ancient Portuguese colonies in Africa, attesting that the piece is several decades old.
Geographic origin and authorship are not confirmed — the style is consistent with popular Lusophone carving of a Portugal-era or former colonies, probably mid-20th century.
Condition: good overall, with small natural cracks in the wood (typical of drying over time), no visible repainting or restorations.
