【Product details】

This beautiful Showa-period Wajima lacquerware (Wajima-nuri) document box was created through a collaboration between Daitetsu of the Daitetsu Hachii Lacquerware Workshop and the internationally recognised maki-e artist Kado Koshi.

A large red peony appears vividly against the deep black lacquer surface. The flower is rendered with richly coloured lacquer and delicate gold maki-e, while the leaves feature softly shaded green lacquer with scattered gold powder. The peony is traditionally associated with wealth, prosperity, and noble beauty.

Maki-e is a traditional Japanese decorative technique in which gold or silver powder is sprinkled onto wet lacquer to create detailed designs.

The Daitetsu Hachii Lacquerware Workshop is a distinguished Wajima workshop known for refining rare domestically produced lacquer from the Tohoku region in-house. It uses the traditional tenpi kurome method, in which lacquer is refined naturally under sunlight, to produce high-quality Wajima lacquerware.

Kado Koshi was born in Wajima, Ishikawa Prefecture, in 1949. He began studying under maki-e artist Kimura Bunzaburo in 1969 and became independent in 1974. His work has been exhibited in Japan and internationally, including exhibitions in New York, Denver, and Amsterdam.

The original wooden box with cord is included. It bears the signatures and seals of both Daitetsu and Kado Koshi.

The box is in very good vintage condition, with no major noticeable damage, and the lacquer retains a beautiful gloss. There are only very minor surface scuffs and one tiny lacquer nick along the bottom edge. The outer base has minor scuffs, and the interior base has one small area of slight lacquer lifting. The wooden box shows light age-related stains. Please refer to the photos for details.
