Description from the seller

Rare original vintage silver-galantine print from the year 1937!

Photograph by the famous German photographer August Sander (1876-1964).

In the print, at the bottom right, the circular embossing stamp: Aug. Sander * Köln - Lindenthal.

On the reverse -center- a square studio stamp: (in typical Bauhaus style everything in lowercase)

august sander lichtbildner dürenerstr. 201 fernruf 42492 ** (this company logo was designed by the distinguished Cologne avant-garde artist and painter Franz Wilhelm Seiwert - a portrait photograph of this artist also appeared in August Sander's monumental work "Menschen des 20. Jahrhunderts". The MoMA New York owns the complete cycle of it.)

**From 1911 until its destruction in 1944, the residence and studio of August Sanders were located at this address.**

Handwritten note about the scene:
" Beerdigung von (Klemen's ?) Vater 1937 vom Trauerhaus aus "

The print is glued to the top edge onto grey cardboard - otherwise loose.
The condition is good with minimal superficial signs of aging.

Image size: 23.3 x 16 cm * Overall size (cardboard): 31.2 x 23.2 cm

The print comes from my private collection and I acquired it circa 2016 at an antique market in Cologne.

August Sander is worldwide regarded as one of the most important photographers of the 20th century.
His photographs are primarily classified as documentary-objective photography.
Extensive biographical data, career details & exhibitions are available, among other sources, on Wikipedia.
