Paul Deltombe (1878–1971) is a French painter whose work traverses the major currents of 20th-century modern art. Trained at the Beaux-Arts of Lille and then in Paris, he frequented avant-garde circles and exhibited as early as 1902 at the Salon des Indépendants. Influenced by Impressionism, Fauvism, and Divisionism, he develops a personal style blending the rigor of composition with the poetry of color.
Settled in Champtoceaux, on the Loire, he devotes a large part of his life to painting the landscapes of the Loire Valley, still lifes, and intimate scenes. He also plays an important role in the decorative arts, notably in tapestry, which he reinvents with his wife Yvonne Berthault. Director of the École des Beaux-Arts de Nantes from 1931 to 1943, he contributes to the local art scene while continuing a discreet but profound body of work.
Paul Deltombe embodies a sensitive modernity, at the crossroads of the avant-gardes and tradition.
