About
Gerhard Vormwald (1948–2016) was a German photographer, photo artist, and professor, internationally known for his surreal photographic stagings. After studying painting, graphic arts, and photography at the Werkkunstschule Mannheim, he initially worked as a stage photographer at the Nationaltheater Mannheim before opening his own studio in the early 1970s. Vormwald became known for elaborately staged photographs in which people and objects seemingly defy gravity—long before digital image editing. His works appeared on the covers of Stern, Playboy, Zeit Magazin, and Pardon. In 1983 he moved to Paris and further developed his distinctive visual language between Surrealism, staging, and experimental photography. Gerhard Vormwald ranks among the formative German photographic artists of the 1980s and 1990s and later taught as a Professor of Photography at the Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences.
